How Does Damp Affect my Home?

Damp causes a huge range of problems both to properties and the people who occupy them. The longer you have a damp problem, the more widespread the issues become and the more you’ll notice the detrimental effects. Having damp walls reduces their ability to effectively insulate, meaning you spend more energy (and money!) heating your home – often with very little effect.

Damp also spreads into woodwork and plaster. You might notice crumbling or cracked plasterwork, leading to the deterioration of the structure of your wall, as well as the decor. When damp takes hold, all surrounding material absorbs the moisture, including floors and timber beams. If this is left, you can develop wet rot.

Damp homes are the perfect place for fungal microbes to develop, leading to mould on your walls, ceilings or in your cupboards. Mould, particularly black mould, can seriously damage health – particularly with children, adolescents or elderly people. It can lead to the development of asthma or other respiratory problems. Rising Damp

Rising damp describes moisture which makes its way into a building’s walls from the ground beneath the property. It begins in the lower wall and is drawn up by capillary action. It is absorbed by the brick and plaster on the wall’s internal surface, spreading throughout the wall.

Penetrating Damp

Penetrating damp is caused when moisture is absorbed into the walls from the surrounding area, not simply from the ground below. This is most common in basements and cellars as the room is surrounded by damp earth, but can also occur in above-ground walls.
